When Aaron Rai lifted the Wanamaker Trophy after winning the PGA Championship 2026 at Aronimink Golf Club, much of the attention focused on his composed finish under pressure. But almost as much interest surrounded what was inside his golf bag.
In an era where elite players constantly rotate equipment in search of marginal gains, Rai won his first major with a driver released in 2019 — and iron covers that have become almost extinct on the PGA TOUR.
The Englishman still trusts a TaylorMade M6 Driver, a model that first hit the market seven years ago. Although he has tested newer options over time, Rai has always returned to the same club.
At Aronimink, it delivered once again.
Rai was nowhere near the longest hitter in the field, but he was among the straightest. He ranked near the top in driving accuracy for the week and hit seven of his final eight fairways on Sunday as others around him faltered.
It perfectly reflected the identity of his game — built on precision, patience and control rather than pure power.
Still, the biggest talking point remained the iron covers protecting his TaylorMade P7TW Irons. On modern professional tours, iron covers are almost never seen, but for Rai they carry far more meaning than simple preference.
He has previously spoken about growing up in a working-class family where golf was anything but affordable. His father sacrificed heavily to provide him with quality equipment and treated every club as something valuable.
“We didn’t really have the money, but my dad always wanted me to have the best opportunities,” Rai once explained.
As a child, Rai received a premium set of Titleist irons that cost close to £1,000 — a huge investment for the family. After every practice session, his father carefully cleaned the clubs before eventually buying iron covers to help protect them.
They have remained in the bag ever since.
“It’s about appreciating what I have and never forgetting where I came from,” Rai said in an earlier interview.
In many ways, the setup became the perfect reflection of Rai himself. While others chase constant change and the latest technology, Aaron Rai reached the top of the sport by trusting the habits, routines and values that had carried him there all along.
