The opening round of the 2026 Players Championship had its share of drama, including an unexpected withdrawal by favorite Collin Morikawa due to back issues. Rain delayed play briefly, but action was vibrant at TPC Sawgrass.

Five Share Early Lead

Five players ended Thursday tied for the lead at five under par, with Austin Smotherman leaving a birdie putt to start on Friday. His impressive putting was a highlight, along with Sepp Straka's bogey-free round, emphasizing iron play excellence despite hitting few fairways.

Joining them at the top are Americans Maverick McNealy, Sahith Theegala, and Lee Hodges. McNealy turned his disastrous score from last year into success, while Theegala thrived in tee-to-green, and Hodges excelled in putting.

Thomas and Others Bounce Back

After a disappointing return from surgery, Justin Thomas crafted a solid 68, aided by strong putting. Russell Henley matched his score, while Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Ã…berg and Viktor Hovland impressed with their steady performances at three under par.

Rory McIlroy struggled with a 74, faltering on par-5s, while top-ranked Scottie Scheffler found difficulties in accuracy off the tee. He finished even par.
