Scottie Scheffler, frustrated after three challenging rounds, found his rhythm on the back nine Saturday at Shinnecock Hills during the U.S. Open, allowing him to jump into contention.
While others struggled, the world No. 1 managed a stunning 32 (3-under) on the second nine, aiming for a Career Grand Slam. However, a bogey at 17 and a missed putt on the final hole left him tied for third as the late groups got to the tougher part of the course. Wyndham Clark maintained his lead at 7-under par through 54 holes.
Early in his round, Scheffler was 2-over, nine strokes behind. Yet, his approach on the 10th left him a critical 7-foot birdie chance. Momentum peaked with a chip-in on the 14th, boosting his energy. He capitalized with another birdie on the next hole.
At the 16th, a fortunate 270-yard shot left him an eagle chance, which transformed into a third consecutive birdie. Despite a bunker setback on the 17th and a near miss at 18, Scheffler is still within striking distance for the elusive Grand Slam on Sunday.
