The Royal & Ancient announced that The Open Championship will make its return to Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2028. This will mark the 12th occasion the iconic English venue has hosted the prestigious event, which last took place there in 2012.
Royal Lytham, situated in Lancashire, England, will also be the venue for the AIG Women's Open in July. Mark Darbon, CEO of the R&A, highlighted the venue's storied history and the anticipated excitement among fans eager to witness the historic golf tournament.
This decision effectively excludes Turnberry, owned by Donald Trump, from the lineup. The Scottish course hasn't hosted The Open since 2009. Challenges such as limited infrastructure and ongoing political issues contribute to this decision.
Royal Lytham has invested in its facilities to meet The Open's standards. In 2028, the tournament will occur from August 3-6, accounting for the Summer Olympics. Tim Walker, of Royal Lytham & St Annes, expressed pride in their historical link with The Open.
