The two-time major champion says his back is improving, but admits trust in his body remains a work in progress.
Collin Morikawa has provided an encouraging injury update ahead of next week's U.S. Open, although the former major winner admits he is not yet fully comfortable.
The 29-year-old has been managing a back injury since March, when he was forced to withdraw from the Players Championship. While he has since returned to competition, Morikawa says he is still rebuilding confidence in both his swing and his body.
“I still have a trust factor that I’m trying to find,” Morikawa said. “It’s a lot better than it was, but I’m still a little on edge because I don’t want it to happen again.”
The American believes his game is close to where he wants it to be, but says consistency has been difficult while working through the recovery process. He hopes another week of practice and tournament play will provide a boost ahead of Shinnecock Hills.
Away from golf, Morikawa recently became a father for the first time, something he says has helped him keep perspective and relax more off the course.
A seven-time PGA TOUR winner, Morikawa's best U.S. Open result remains a tie for fourth in 2021, and he will be hoping improved health can help him contend for a third major title next week.
