The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach experienced a brief delay in opening its gates on Saturday morning due to a police pursuit of a murder suspect. A double homicide occurred in a nearby Walgreens parking lot, leading authorities to TPC Sawgrass, the venue for this week's tournament.
Early Saturday, officials posted on the championship's official X account, announcing that fan entry would be postponed until 9 a.m. ET. The delay stemmed from 'operational' reasons, though tee times and hospitality venues would proceed as planned.
The suspect, identified as Christian Barrios, 32, had reportedly evaded capture by fleeing to the northeastern part of Florida, crashing a stolen BMW, and fleeing on foot. Authorities tracked him to PGA Tour property, where it is believed he interacted with staff and used a radio.
Ultimately, he was apprehended around 8 a.m. ET. Fans were then allowed entry soon after, at 9 a.m. ET, for the third round of the tournament.
