Italian golfer Andrea Pavan went through a life-changing ordeal on February 25 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Staying with friends for a golf tour, his life took a dramatic turn after he fell three stories down an elevator shaft.
The incident happened as Pavan was preparing for the Investec South African Open. While using the elevator, it wasn't there and he plunged into the shaft, severely injuring his shoulder and vertebrae.
Survival Instincts
Despite the trauma, Pavan remained conscious and used his left hand to call for help. His caddie, Francisco Mateo, hurried to his aid while rescue teams arrived swiftly.
“The pain was excruciating,”
Pavan recalled. After emergency services rescued him, he was hospitalized for his injuries, which required surgery.
Pavan's wife, Audra, flew from Texas to support him as he recovered. Community support has been overwhelming, with aid from friends and fellow golfers—including donations and accommodations from Johann Rupert.
Despite an uncertain golfing future, Pavan treasures his chance of reuniting with family and cautiously hopes for future golfing days.
