Bryson DeChambeau endured a nightmare start to the PGA Championship 2026 with an opening-round 76, leaving him in danger of another missed cut at Aronimink Golf Club.
The two-time U.S. Open champion has become one of golf’s ultimate boom-or-bust major performers in recent years. Since winning the 2024 U.S. Open, DeChambeau has either finished inside the top 10 or missed the cut in all six majors he has played.
Thursday’s struggles came largely from poor distance control, inconsistent wedge play and costly mistakes around the greens. While DeChambeau continued to overpower the course off the tee, his short game repeatedly let him down and frustration visibly grew throughout the round.
During practice rounds earlier in the week, the American also appeared to struggle controlling ball flight in the heavy winds at Aronimink. After signing his card on Thursday, he headed straight to the range in search of answers before Friday’s second round.
Despite the disappointing day, DeChambeau did finish with a birdie on his final hole — though he will likely need a low score on Friday to survive the cut.
